The investigation leads them to Dr. Arlovlov Loveless, a brilliant but insane Confederate scientist who uses a wheelchair due to losing the lower half of his body in the war. Loveless is holding the other scientists captive and is using them to build a massive, steam-powered mechanical spider equipped with heavy weaponry.
